Kaptain Sunshine

Launched in 2013 and based in Tokyo, Kaptain Sunshine is designer Shinsuke Kojima’s homage to vintage Americana, with each season riffing on variations of field and naval workwear. Kojima-san draws from a rich, archival knowledge of heritage clothing but executes in a way that is strikingly modern. He uses volume, cut, and fabric to produce his own refreshing takes on outdoor and nautical influences. Perhaps stemming from his days in publishing, Kojima-san creates lookbooks that situate the clothes in natural environments (in the woods, mountains, or by the seaside) in ways reminiscent of vintage catalogs. We love Kaptain Sunshine because of its careful balance of tradition and modernity, the rustic and the refined.
